Communications Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Robert Coleman says Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives who fail to implement by-laws on sanitation should be sacked.

His comment follows the 100-day nationwide sanitation campaign launched by the government.

Last week, Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, directed the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and sanitation agencies to clear all heaps of garbage at unapproved dump sites in the metropolis within 10 days.

But speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Monday, Robert Coleman pointed: “Without the by-laws being implemented, Veep’s ultimatum will be a fiasco”.

According to him, all the MMDCEs have by-laws which if strictly enforced, should solve the sanitation and environmental challenges confronting major cities of the country particularly, Accra.

“I am of a firm view that any DCE [District Chief Executive] who fails to implement each of the by-laws, should be shown the exit,” Mr. Coleman stated insisting that “enforcement is key”.

He however, commended the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Vanderpuye for establishing the Sanitation Court which continues to prosecute persons who disregard environmental laws.

Other assemblies should replicate the initiative and establish Sanitation Courts in their areas to check sanitation, he suggested.

Clean Accra

Meanwhile, Mr. Vanderpuye says the AMA has no excuse not to collect waste generated in the city with the addition of two landfill sites in the Ga West and East Municipal assemblies.

Newly commissioned Sonitra and Nsumia projects in the two municipalities would help ease pressure on the Kpone landfill site, the Mayor noted.

“We will continue to work…once we have a dumping site we have no excuse than to collect the refuse that is generated in Accra,” he declared.

He said staff of the Assembly have worked tirelessly to clear refuse in some 13 communities within the metropolis with support from central government.

“If you go through town today you will find that the city is cleaner today…our eye is on the ball and we are clearing the refuse,” Mr. Vanderpuye said.
