After over 6 years of warming the political bench, Dr. Ekow Spio-Gabrah will take the next step into government as Trades Minister when he faces Parliament's Appointment Committee which is promising to be tough against the odds.
Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, was nominated by President Mahama last June as Trade Minister to replace Haruna Iddrisu.
He is a former Minister of Communication, a one-time Ambassador to the U.S and Mexico, a former Minister of Education and Minister for Mines and Energy. He served in the cabinet during the democratic regime of Jerry John Rawlings between 1994 and 2000.
But no space was found for Dr. Garbrah in the Mills administration. A situation many political analysts say was worsened by his criticism of the Mills government as a Team B squad, implying the better was on the bench.
Meanwhile, an NPP MP for Tema East Titus Glover (left) promises a good vetting job as Sipo meets the Appointments Committee
President Mahama called him out of a church administration job at Christian Action Faith Chapel International where he was Chief Executive Officer since 2011.
His nomination has been hailed by NDC groups and some
political commentators as an addition of valuable experience as government seeks to improve the calibre of its ministers.
Spio comes to met Ghana's twice downgraded economy and an employment rate which security expert Dr. Kwasi Annin describes as a national security threat.
"It is almost gone. What is he going to do? Has he got the magic wand? I don't think that Dr. Spio has the magic wand to reverse the mess" Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover told Joy News' Elton John Brobby.
The opposition MP who is also a member of the Appointments Committee, promised that Parliament "will do a very good job" screening his C.V and scruntizing his nomination.
Ghana's Parliament hardly rejects a nomination.
