The New Patriotic Party is set to hold a crucial Steering Committee meeting today, to seek best ways to resolve the recent controversies that have bedeviled the party.
The National Executive Committee and National Council of the party are also expected to meet after today’s Steering Committee meeting, where proposals will be made for consideration by NEC and final approval by National Council for implementation.
Ghana's largest opposition party was hit by controversy last week which is only begining to settle. It started last week Tuesday after a violent group of the party's youth confronted and disrupted a press conference called by Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong, National Chairman and General Secretary respectively.
It occured at the party’s headquarters. No one has been arrested and none of the thugs have been identified
The physical confrontation gave away to a slew of verbal attacks with several leading members making their voices heard.
Former President Kufuor has called for calm urging party faithfuls to trade ideas not blows.
The Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has also ordered the leadership of the party to focus on national issues bothering Ghanaians and refrain from the needless internal bickering and squabbling.
In a press release last week, it said “All Party Officers, Functionaries and Communicators should desist from making public statements relating to current internal party issues”.
The Council of Elders also embargoed commentary on electronic and social media on party issues and said anyone who violates these "will be subject to the full application of the Party’s disciplinary procedures”.
