A Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, says Ghana's education system as in crisis after the 2014 WASSSCE results reportedly show an historic poor performance.
According to media reports, 72 percent of the students who sat the West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Education (WASSSCE) obtained results which do not qualify them for admission in the University. Only 28 percent of the students obtained grades A1 to C6 in six of the subjects they studied, including Mathematics and English Language.
Mrs.Gladys Essel, the PRO of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has stated that this year's result was the worse since the inception of WASSSCE in 1993.
Pinning the poor performance on President John Mahama, Nana Akufo-Addo queried "Is this what he means by quality education?"
Nana Akufo-Addo who banked his 2012 election campaign on providing free senior secondary school education told party delegates in the Volta region Monday that unlike President Mahama's tenure, the NPP administration improved the pass rate in the WASSSCE.
“In President Kufuor's time, we saw a constant rate of passing. In our health economic, and political systems, in every aspect of our lives we saw an improvement. Having inherited an economy in good shape this is where they (NDC) have left us”, Akufo-Addo said.
He said in 2004, 40% of students who sat the SSSCE (Senior Secondary School Certificate Education) passed in seven subjects and above, with the pass rates increasing to 44% in 2005. According to him, in 2007, 47% of students who sat for the examination passed in seven subjects and above, instantly qualifying them to be admitted into tertiary institutions.
But under Mahama "7 out of the 10 children have failed the WASSCE and cannot get access to tertiary institutions”, Nana Akufo-Addo said.
“What this means is that after taking them through kindergarten, primary school, Junior High and Senior High, these kids end up with no certificate”, the former Attorney-General said.
Nana Akufo-Addo will be gunning for Presidency for the third time if he wins his party's nomination.
