New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Alan Kyerematen will Saturday afternoon launch his campaign for the party's nomination in the 2016 presidential poll.
There has been intense pressure on Mr. Kyerematen to withdraw from the race and allow two-time flagbearership Nana Akufo-Addo to be acclaimed on October 18.
Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey and Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Osei Ameyaw, who both secured enough votes to qualify for the next stage of the NPP's flagbearer election process, have withdrawn from the contest.
But Nana Ohene Ntow, Spokesperson for Mr. Kyerematen told Joy News he confident in the former Trade Minister's chances.
He said “it’s quite obvious that in spite of the [pressure], Alan is very confident that he is the man to lead NPP to victory. He is very convinced that he has a very strong message of rebuilding the party and reuniting the party.”
Nana Ohene Ntow said Saturday’s event will be an open-air rally and “most of the constituencies have been invited basically from the Greater Accra region in view of the time constraints.”
According to him, Mr. Kyerematen’s camp, apart from inviting the party’s hierarchy, has also received indications that some supporters from other constituencies outside the Greater Accra region will be attending the launch.
Alan Kyerematen’s message at the launch, Nana Ohene Ntow noted, will focus on party unity: “Everybody is talking about party unity and that without unity it is going to be an uphill task for NPP to attempt for the third time in succession to snatch power from the NDC.”
He said his candidate will give the assurance that he has what it takes to unite the party and also resource the party’s grassroots.
Mr. Kyerematen will launch his campaign at Abeka Lapaz, opposite the Abrantie Spot.
