The Upper West Wing of Nasara, a predominantly Muslim group in the New Patriotic Party has declared support for Nana Akufo-Addo.
The group says it will work hard to ensure that the NPP’s two-time presidential candidate secures a landslide victory in the party’s October 18 congress.
A little over 140,000 delegates will vote next month to select a presidential candidate for the 2016 elections.
Ahead of the vote, the Upper West Nasara Wing says it is convinced that Mr. Akufo-Addo represents the NPP’s best chance of annexing power in 2016.
At a press conference in the regional capital, Wa, Regional Nasara Co-ordinator, Mohammed Osman, expressed confidence the region will repeat its 100 percent endorsement of Nana Akufo-Addo.
“Prior to the supper delegate congress, the upper west region declared 100% support for Nana Addo and true to our word, the region gave Nana what was promised him,” he said, alluding to the votes obtained by Mr Akufo-Addo in the NPP’s August 31 Super Delegates’ Conference.
All 32 delegates from the region voted for him giving the experienced politician a clean sweep. Overall, he won that election by 80.78 percent.
Mr. Osman said the declaration was informed by the party's long-standing tradition of respect and reward for loyalty and commitment – things he said Nana Akufo-Addo exemplify.
“We, therefore, use this occasion to humbly appeal to all well-meaning NPP delegates in the Upper West region in particular and the country in general, especially the Nasara wing of the party to massively vote for Nana Akufo-Addo this will send a very strong signal to the NDC, that we are in serious political business to save Ghana from sinking further,” he stated.
Mohammed Osman said the group was particularly excited by Nana Akufo-Addo’s renewed confidence in his running-mate in the last two presidential elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Nana Akufo-Addo has publicly stated that if elected presidential candidate of the NPP, he will nominate the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank for the third time as his running-mate.
“Nana [Akufo-Addo] has shown to us love, as a people by his repeated show of confidence in our brother Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and we are grateful to him for that,” Mr. Osman said.
