The Executive Secretary of Child's Right International is heading to court to compel the West African Examination Council to organise a separate exams for some students who were denied the right to take part in the on-going Basic Education Certificate Exams. According to Bright Appiah, the students must not be made to suffer the consequences of ineptitude by public officials. He has consequently sued the Ghana Education Service for negligence. His action follows a failure by the authorities of Christ the King International School in Kumasi to register some 106 students for the BECE. The head master and the proprietor of the school who have been remanded in police custody were alleged to have misappropriated registration fees for final year students which disqualified them from taking part in the exams. They were also alleged to have forged index numbers for the students to assure them their participation in the exams. A directive by the Education Minister, Mr. Alex Tettey Enyo for the students to be allowed to write the exams could not be followed through as Head of Ghana Education Service in Kumasi said the school has not been accredited by WEAC and cannot be allowed to take part in the exams. With the exams entering its second day Tuesday, it has become clear the affected students cannot enter the Senior High School, at least for this year. This Mr Appiah insists, is not acceptable and the courts must prevail on WAEC to organise another exam for the affected students. He told Citi News on Tuesday, the interest of children as stipulated in the 1992 constitution should supersede all other interest and prayed the court will grant his plea. Meanwhile, the Education Minister has called for a review of monitoring systems at the GES in order to prevent a recurrence of this phenomenon.
