The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the police in the Ashanti Region of wrongfully taking eight of the party’s vehicles. The eight Tata pickup vehicles, which were in the custody of the NPP Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Dr. Afriyie Osei Akoto, are said to have been lodged on the farm of the MP.Hon Afriyie in an interview with Joy News maintained the vehicles were the bonafide property of the NPP and that the action of the police was rather uncalled for.The MP noted that the vehicles had been lodged on the farm since the end of the 2008 elections. The police have, however, denied driving away the vehicles from the farm.Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Mohammed Tanko, said the police only visited the farm upon a tip-off that some stolen vehicles were being kept there.Chief Inspector Tanko said the officers were on the farm to ascertain the ownership of the vehicles.Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Ohene Ntow has said the seizure of the vehicles amounts to theft and suspected government is behind it.He said the party’s intelligence had gathered that the police actually drove the vehicles from the farm.Nana Ntow maintained that the Ashanti Regional Police Commander would know of the whereabouts of the vehicles.“The NPP considers this act as an outrageous attack of the party’s independence and freedom. We are not sure who sent them but we have firm and credible information that the Regional Police Command in Kumasi knows about this activity.”“We are insisting that the vehicles be returned immediately to where the police and those people who towed them, found them originally.”“It appears that this happens to be a perpetuation of the harassment and the intimidation that the current government, the NDC government appears to want to visit on political opponents,” Nana Ntow stated.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com
