Forty-one out of 60 former appointees and public servants have submitted the keys to the state bungalows they occupied to the Public Works Department (PWD).Out of the 41, inventory has been taken of 29 and these have also been assessed and estimates made on the cost of renovations for new ministers to occupy the bungalows.The estimates are to be forwarded to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing for the release of funds for renovation before new ministers can occupy the residences.The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr Albert Abongo, said only one former appointee had contacted the ministry to be granted an extension of a week before vacating the ministerial residence.The ministry has also started allocating the buildings to ministers, pending renovation works.The Greater Accra Regional Engineer of the PWD in charge of prestige accommodation, Mr Robert W. Amenyeawu, said the inventory arid assessment of the buildings begun after the April 7, 2009 deadline given to former appointees to vacate ministerial accommodation.Explaining the process of getting accommodation ready for new ministers, Mr Amenyeawu said the PWD was notified when former appointees vacated their residences for an inventory to be taken.That was then reconciled with a prior inventory taken before the former appointees were allocated the accommodation.Any inconsistency was either reported to the ministry or sometimes sorted out by the appointee who had the accommodation.He said furnishings, plumbing, electrical wiring and the physical state of the buildings were considerations in the inventory and assessment.Daily Graphic
