The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned alleged threats and intimidation on its Volta Regional Chairman, Mr Kenwood Noworsu, and members of the party on the basis of political opinions.
It said it had noted with great concern the demonstration of the chiefs and warriors of the Asogli State against its Chairman for expressing his opinion on pronouncements recently made by Togbui Afede.
A release signed by the National Chairman of the party, Peter Mac Manu, said much as the party believes in the right to resort to demonstration by persons or groups to show their resentment against the opinions and deeds, “we condemn these acts of intimidation and threats.”
“That the chiefs and warriors of the Asogli State should pick on the regional chairman is unacceptable and an affront to his democratic and civil rights in our current democratic dispensation,” the statement said.
It stated that what Mr. Noworsu did was to add his voice to the numerous criticisms leveled against the chief by various people.
"If because he expressed his views he is being declared as a persona non grata in his region, then God save Ghana," it added.
The release said the party would not countenance any harassment and acts of intimidation of its functionaries, officers, supporters and members in any part of the country.
It commended the police for the timely intervention in the matter and urged them to continue to protect the lives and properties of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations or regions.
It added that the country had come very far in personal freedom, free speech and free expression of opinions.
"We should not allow any group of people, be they chiefs, political parties or individuals or groups, to take the hard-won freedom from us using lies and falsehood. The NPP will always champion the truth,” it said.
