The newly elected Mayor of Accra, Alfred Vanderpuije, has dismissed claims that the president, John Evans Atta Mills violated sections of the constitution to have him elected.The pressure group, The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has threatened to challenge the confirmation of Vanderpuije in court, accusing the president of appointing more than 30 per cent of the 90 member Assembly.By the constitution, the president is expected to nominate 30 percent of the Assembly members.The group had early on accused Mr. Vanderpuije of embezzlement of some funds, when he (Vanderpuije) headed a high school in the United States, an accusation the Mayor has strongly contested.Alfred Vanderpuije secured a landslide victory in the Assembly election held on Thursday, polling 86 votes from 90.Mr. Vanderpuije told Joy News’ Evans Mensah after his election that the president did not exceed his quota.The elected Mayor said improving sanitation in the metropolis is his biggest priority, adding “sanitation affects the health of the people in Accra.”He is bent on providing leadership to the assembly and called on all to help in improving the lot of residents.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline
