Supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress in Bunkrugu Yunyuo are demonstrating against the president nominee for District Chief Executive. The protesters say Hajia Mayriga Bawa is not a known member of the party and must therefore be rejected. They contend that the nominee should not have been considered at all for the job fearing she will act inconsistently with the beliefs of the ruling party. The leader of the group, Pibia Konlan told Joy News that Hajia Bawa supported an independent parliamentary candidate in the last elections and does not see the reason why she should be nominated for the job."She will bully us the party members. She didn't work for the party, she doesn't know those who actually suffered so how can she develop the area," he noted. Many of president J.E.A. Mills' nominees for DCE positions have faced similar protests. The Local Government Minister, Joseph Yiele Chiereh has even warned the protests are likely to affect the president's resolve to reserve 40 per cent of government appointments for women. He said women who were nominated for the position of DCE had particularly faced stiff opposition compared to their male counterparts. His concerns followed the rejection of Emelia Arthur by the Shama District Assembly.Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com
