Former Majority Leader, Abraham Osei Aidoo has admitted benefiting from soft furnishings provided for by the Parliamentary Service Board (PSD).According to him, it is the practice and policy by the House of Parliament to provide soft furnishings as entitlements to the leadership which includes senior staff members of Parliament. His admission follows weeks of condemnation of the ex-speaker of Parliament, Ebenezer Sakyi-Hughes over allegations he swept clean his official bungalow of all soft furnishings as part of his retirement benefits. An ad-hoc committee was set up by the PSD to investigate the whereabouts of the missing furnishings in the ex-speakers bungalow. But Alban Bagbin, Majority Leader launched scathing attacks on the ex-speaker, accusing him of looting state property.
His attacks follow reports allegedly made by the ex-speaker that the majority leader and other leadership of parliament have been paid monies in lieu of soft furnishings. He (Bagbin) insisted he had not benefited from any money as payment for soft furnishings and that the policy was adopted late in the last parliament but was revoked by the Banford-Addo led administration. In an interesting twist to the saga, the former Majority Leader, Abraham Osei Aidoo told Citi News he kept his soft furnishings as part of an understanding reached by the PSD.He however noted the policy to pay monies in lieu of other soft furnishings that were not provided for by the PSD to the leadership is yet to be implemented.Alban Bagbin in a subsequent interview said the state had provided him some soft furnishings, including a generator which he is using in his private residence, but was quick to add those furnishings will be returned to the state once he retires from office. What is not too clear however is whether there is an existing policy for leaders of the house to retire with their furnishings, as various leaders give contradictory views on the matter.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline
