Government has described as irresponsible the action of some former state officials who thronged the offices of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) where former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani had been called for questioning. Hordes of former officials of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) swarmed the premises of the BNI demanding the release of Mr Mpiani who they said was billed to chair a meeting of the officials that evening. The ex-ministers and sympathisers are said to have blocked roads leading to the bureau amid chanting of war songs. Yoni Kulendi, one of three lawyers who were reported to have accompanied Mr Mpiani, said the former Chief of Staff was questioned on a wide range of issues bordering on government expenditure on the Ghana@50 celebrations, the UNCTAD conference, the Golden Jubilee House and a wide range of projects started during the NPP’s eight years in office. Mr Mpiani was released late Tuesday to return for further questioning on Wednesday. But at a press conference on Tuesday to present government’s stance on the development, Deputy Information Minister, James Agyenim Boateng, said the reaction of the ministers was rather uncalled for. He said government does not intend to hound members of the opposition. While describing the NPP fraternity as “people who believe in the rule of law,” Mr Boateng said ex-officials and sympathisers should have been more civil. He stressed the NDC government would continue to investigate ex-officials whose actions conflicted with the law. Reacting to the reported arrest of two reporters from the Daily Guide newspaper, Mr Boateng said the BNI picked up the men because they had been “loitering about” at a “highly sensitive security installation.” Mr. Mpiani is expected to return to the BNI office accompanied by his team of lawyers - Yoni Kulendi, Egbert Faibille and Hamida Nuhu.
