The President, Prof J.E. A. Mills, has stated that he will not hesitate to dispense with the services of chief executives of assemblies whose actions will create adverse public disaffection against the government.
He promised to deal harshly with chief executives who became so obsessed with their own self-importance to the point of relegating to the background the real and genuine interests and aspirations of the people.
He explained that since the government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in power on the ticket of the electorate, chief executives should not pursue individual ambitions which would alienate the people from the government.
The President sounded the warning yesterday when he addressed chief executives drawn from the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies across the country who are attending a four-day workshop at the Institute of Local Government Studies at Madina, a suburb of Accra.
The workshop, on the theme, "Chief executives as agents in participatory local governance", is also intended to build the capacity of the chief executives in the discharge of their duties, which include revenue mobilisation, dealing with the various political structures at the district level and the various stakeholders, especially traditional authorities and heads of decentralised departments.
According to President Mills, he would not hesitate to remove from office chiefs executives who showed insubordination to the electorate or got entangled in any web of financial malfeasance.
The President cautioned them to avoid the temptation of misapplying or misappropriating resources which would be allocated from the central government for the main purpose of providing basic social and economic facilities for the vast majority of the people.
In his opening remarks, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Yieleh Chireh, asked the chief executives to avoid ostentatious lifestyles that would attract massive public criticisms and condemnation of the government.
