Lawyer for Greater Accra chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Crabbe, says the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has no legal authority to question his client.Mr Kwame Boateng, a member of Mr Crabbe’s legal counsel said this is because a case bordering on the operations and ownership of Ghana International Airlines (GIA) is still before court.Mr Crabbe once Vice President of the beleaguered GIA was called to the BNI for interrogation questioning on the operations of the airline.The BNI are tight-lipped about details of issues presented the NPP kingpin but sources close to the bureau mentioned a $1.9m deal in 2006 wrongly presented as theft. Parties at the GIA and the shareholders knew about the contract.It is also known that Mr. Crabbe was invited to the BNI for questioning on his involvement in the establishment of GIA, in which he has a 30-percent stake.But Lawyer Kwame Boateng said the interrogation by the BNI amounts to harassment of his client and would sue the bureau if the practice becomes persistent.“By the rules of Ghana you can’t do that whilst we are in civil litigation you cannot use some apparatus of yours to interfere with the case in anyway,” Mr Boateng stressed.Mr Crabbe’s is one of three former officials in the erstwhile Kufuor administration undergoing a series of interrogation by the bureau.Spokesperson for former President Kufuor, Mr Frank Agyekum, was also invited Thursday to respond to questions on a project he embarked on at Information Ministry during the last administration.The cases of the two follow a series of wide-ranging interrogations of the former Chief of Staff also by the BNI.Critics of the government have chided the bureau for harassing officials of the previous administration.Meanwhile the presidency has served notice government would ensure all public officials account for their stewardship.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com
