A leading member of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Mr K.S.P. Jantua, has attribÂuted the dwindling fortunes of the party to people who fight tooth and nail to get positions in the party just to attract positions and other consideraÂtions from other political parties.
Such people, he said, never had the progress of the CPP at heart, as they only spent money and convinced everybody in the party that they were the best perÂsons for the leading positions and when they got the positions, they did very little to brighten the chances of the party to win elections.
Mr Jantua, 89, who was speaking to the Daily Graphic, said because the party had lacked genuine people to lead it, it had failed to generate quality leadership at various levels that would pave the way for the party to assume its position as a mass political party.
"They know that for now, the CPP cannot offer the platform for them to realise their parochial ambitions and enrich themselves. The long and short of it is that, such people do not belong to the CPP in spirit," he added.
He said unlike the period of Dr Kwame Nkrumah when dedicated supÂporters and leaders on their own volition worked assiduously for the party to attain independence and win elections, some leaders and supporters of today did not show any nationalism and patriotism towards the work of the party and the nation as well.
"Some of us worked for the party without asking what it would do for us. We were not interested in monetary reward before embarking on any work for the party," Mr Janutua said.
He described as sacrilegious, recent comments by some leading members of the party that the symbol, ideology, colours and motto, as well as the name of the party, would not necessarily win elecÂtions for the CPP.
Mr Jantua said people were only findÂing a way to hide their inadequacies and inability to convince the Ghanaian voter about what the CPP stood for and the benefit they would derive from voting for the CPP.
He cited for instance the way some people always mixed up the party ideolÂogy of socialism with communism.
"How can anyone professing to be a good Christian claim that the name, teachings and beliefs of Jesus Christ are no longer relevant and could not in any way help to win souls for Christ?" he asked.
Mr Jantua urged the party members to be extra vigilant when electing officers to lead the CPP to ensure that those elected would genuinely seek the welfare of the party.
