Christian Siriano has stepped up to provide face masks to medical workers fighting coronavirus, after Governor Andrew Cuomo offered funding to businesses who can help out with the low supply.
“If @NYGovCuomo says we need masks my team will help make some. I have a full sewing team still on staff working from home that can help,” Siriano tweeted on Friday.
“We’re in contact with @CSiriano. Appreciate his help so much,” Cuomo, 62, shared shortly afterwards. “Who’s next? Let’s do this together, NY!”
Siriano, 34, had a prototype ready to go before the day was done, posting an Instagram video of a staffer wearing a mask his studio had created. “We will be making a few versions of this in order to help as many people as we can,” the designer captioned the clip. “Here is the process so we can get a perfect fit. More to come thank you everyone we hope to get these to the right people ASAP.”
New York City officials have been warning about the need for more surgical masks since February. Cuomo made the plea for business to step in during his press conference on Friday.
“We will pay a premium for these products. If you have a business that doesn’t manufacture these exact items, but you have the equipment and you believe you can … if you can make them, we will give you funding to do it, to get the right equipment, the personnel. I am asking businesses to be creative … We need those masks, gowns, gloves, and we need them now,” Cuomo said.
