The Ghana Blind Union has appealed for relief packages which have been uniquely tailored to meet the needs of persons with disabilities in the wake of Covid-19 Outbreak.
According to them, they are yet to benefit from packages of food, Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) and economic stimulus packages being rolled out by government.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Executive Director of the Union, Dr Peter Obeng Asamoah, stated that if the people with disabilities are left unaided, everyone is likely to be affected later.
“Most of our members are not able to go out there to pursue economic activities for themselves. Generally they need people to support and guide them.”
"Many blind people are breadwinners in their families and so when they have these economic limitations if affects their children. They are not able to afford basic safety things like hand sanitisers, face masks," he told JoyNews’ Piesie Nana Yaw Safo.
He made these remarks on the sidelines of a donation event organised by the Civil Society (CSO) platforms on Sustainable Development Goals on Monday.
Dr Asamoah lamented that the members of the union have not received the deserved attention because they have special needs than other disabled people.
“We would like the coordination to be a bit better. If you just lump us into persons with disabilities, it is likely that the blind people will not be able to access that support.
"That’s why we would like the kind of things we need to come directly to us and then we will know how to get them our members,” he explained.
He assured that the members of the union are adhering to social distancing protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
