Minority Leader in Parliament Haruna Iddrisu has pledged a new procedure for acquiring a voters’ ID card within the first 100 days of a potential NDC government in 2021.
The Tamale South MP said should the NDC come into office after the December 2020 general elections, “we will make it natural for any Ghanaian attaining 18 years to walk freely to any office of the Commission and be registered…”
He said this would be done through the “deployment of acceptable electronic technology which will work into the future of electronic voting for Ghana.”
The promise follows a failed attempt by the NDC Members of Parliament to set aside a Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) presented by the Electoral Commission to govern electioneering process henceforth.
In the new C.I. which was passed by a 106-92 majority in the House Tuesday, only the Ghana card issued by the National Identification Authority (NIA) and the Ghanaian Passport can be used as primary documents for acquiring a voters’ ID.
In the absence of that, one must have two guarantors to be able to enroll as a voter in Ghana.
The NDC argues this will lead to mass disenfranchisement of the Ghanaian voter as less than 10 million Ghanaians are in possession of an NIA card or a passport.
But the EC insists this lacuna can be solved by getting guarantors for those without the two documents.
The NDC, however, remains adamant.
Mr. Iddrisu said allowing the C.I. to pass “violates the integrity of every electoral process and therefore, outcome.”
