A little over 2000 delegates will decide the fate of 11 aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in five constituencies in the Upper West Region.

Apart from Interior Minister Ambrose Dery who is going unopposed in the Nandom constituency, the remaining four constituencies will be hotly contested for by 11 stalwarts of the party.

Four of the aspirants are incumbents seeking reelection.

Among them is Deputy Roads and Highways Minister, Anthony Nyoh Abayifaa Karbo.

He seemed to have a less difficult task among the quadruplets due to the tremendous development he has brought to the Lawra constituency coupled with the caliber of the contender he is facing on Saturday.

He believes that another four-term as a legislator will give the people the needed development they have longed for.

This is the second time Joseph Bilson Dontaa, a former employee of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), is pitching his strength against Anthony Abayifaa Karbo.

In the first instance four years ago, he was completely battered and humiliated by the latter. Mr Bison Dontaa could only manage 63 of the 600 votes.

It's being alleged that he has been pushed to the election by some bigwigs of the party in the Region to settle political scores. An allegation he has strenuously denied.   

There is another two-horse race in the Sissala East constituency. A constituency which is a swing seat but was first won by the NPP in 2016 by a political rookie, Ridwan Abass Daud after 24 years of unsuccessful attempt by the party.

Nicknamed the Sissala East Messi, Ridwan Abass says it will be unwise and dangerous for the party to substitute him at this stage when he is the only potent striker around.

However, Deputy Upper West Minister Amidu Chinnia Issahaku has other ideas.

In the Wa East constituency, three aspirants have filed to unseat incumbent, Godfrey Bayong Tangu.

The local musician turned politician is not perturbed about the people breathing under his neck.

His strongest opposition is likely going to come from his old foe, Engineer Yakubu Salifu, nicknamed the grassroots man.

Adams S. Yakubu and Baduon Nashirudeen complete the list of aspirants.

In the Sissala West constituency, Patrick Adam Alhassan will have it tough against former Sissala West District Chief Executive, Salifu Naliwie.

The third aspirant is John Boscos Luri.

 He says this is not the time to mess around. However Salifu Naliwie thinks that the hope of the party in the constituency is being lost and needs to be restored.

The NPP moved from zero to win five seats in the 2016 general election. An achievement that shocked many in the region but not S.B Kangbere which was an issue when he was campaigning to be the party's Upper West Regional Chairman.

Now he is the saddle, fluke or no fluke. The people are waiting with bated breath to see what is different beneath his sleeves.
