A group calling itself Backbone for Good Governance has petitioned the National House of Chiefs to prevail on the Electoral Commission to suspend its planned compilation of a new voters’ register.
The Commission says the current register is unfit for purpose, a reason why it is compiling a new electoral roll for the December 2020 polls.
But the members say the exercise amounts to waste of national resources and a gamble with the health of Ghanaians in the face of rising covid-19 infections and an existing register.
The EC’s decision to compile a new voter’s register has attracted intense protests from the NDC and civil some civil society organizations.
Despite agitations against the exercise, the Commission has set June 30 to start compiling the new register.
Backbone for Good Governance which claims to be non-partisan, believes the National House of Chiefs still has the authority to convince the EC to rescind its decision.
