The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of plotting to disenfranchise voters in its strongholds to suppress votes in the December elections.
This, the opposition party, said was evident in the numerous irregularities and malfunctioning of equipment that has plagued the ongoing voter registration exercise across the country.
The Ho Central Constituency NDC Communication Officer, Sefadzi Agama, blamed government for the delay in the commencement of phase 3 of the ongoing registration exercise in parts of Ho.
He explained that 14 registration centers in the Volta Regional capital were not detailed with the biometric voter registration kit as of 11 am on Sunday.
The development he said was part of the scheme to frustrate the registration exercise in the NDC stronghold.
This, he said, alluded to the NDC’s long-held position that the Electoral Commission was ill-prepared to compile an electoral roll, let alone organise this year's general elections.
"It is abundantly clear to us that, government has realised its failed attempt at intimidating people of the Volta Region with heavily armed soldiers, Immigration officers and members of NPP party vigilante forces, disguising themselves as National Security operatives, in the region as if we were in a state of emergency”, he stated in a press release.
He, therefore, implored civil society organizations, traditional authorities and the clergy to condemn the "unfortunate development, and urge the EC to doesn't from engaging in nefarious activity against the rights and the will of the people, to tread cautiously, so not to incur the wrath of the citizens of Ghana.”
The Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Salormey Adukpo Dogbey, explained in a telephone interview that the registration exercise had delayed in some centres across the region due to the unavailability of activation codes to some of the biometric registration kits.
He, however, added that the codes were later sent to activate the kits for registration to commence in four out of 18 districts in the Region.
”We are through with Anloga, Ketu South, Adaklu and Akatsi North Districts. We are still working on the rest, and hoping that all 409 registration centres in the region will be operational by tomorrow,” he assured.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has attributed the delay in the commencement of phase 3 of the voter registration exercise at some parts of the country to bad network and announced an extension of the exercise in the affected areas.
”Details of the extension for the affected registration centres will be communicated in due course” was stated in a release signed by Acting Director of Public Affairs, Sylvia Annoh.
