A global health expert has cautioned against complacency toward observing Covid-19 safety protocols as government eases restrictions.
Dr John Amuasi explained that the continued easing of Covid-19 restrictions had a psychological effect on people who now believe there was no cause for alarm.
He wants people to be given more information to remind them of the need to stay safe since the virus infection rate may be actively rising.
“The paradox is we are easing up so the mind tell you that things are getting better. Rather, when we begin to ease up you need to be more stringent from the public level to the individual level constraint which is personal hygiene,” he lamented
Dr Amuasi's comments follow worrying the reports about an increasing disregard for Covid-19 safety protocols as restrictions are gradually being eased.
The lecturer at the Department of Global Health said this on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Monday.
“Within a few weeks, if we do not ramp up the messaging and get people to take personal responsibility, we might see a change from our otherwise not too bad looking picture right now and I am very much concerned about it,” he warned.
Dr Amuasi called for legislation, community policing and increased education by religious leaders to ensure the adherence to the existing protocols which he says have been thrown to the wind.
He cited badly hit countries that are suffering a resurgence after people got infected.
Two weeks ago, President Nana Akuo-Addo reopened the Kotoka International Airport to human traffic after months of closure in order to prevent the importation of more coronavirus cases.
Currently, Ghana has recorded 45, 434 total cases, 286 deaths and 44, 342 recoveries.
