Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service Kwame Asuah Takyi has observed now is the time for stakeholders to adequately resource the service.
He says the service is currently working actively to deal with major threats and will need all the support it can get.
“I must say the vehicles have come at a better period where the service is actively responding to current security challenges that have the tendency to undermine Ghana’sborder security.
“The current developments along the borders bring to the fore the need for more support to adequately resources the service to enhance its operational capabilities. The opportunity for swift emergency situations calls for standby teams in thiscrucial time,” Mr. Asuah Takyi said.
He was speaking when the German Embassy presented 6 pick up patrol vehicles and a bus to the Rapid Response Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service.
“The Ghana Immigration Service views the commitment and support of the government of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Ghana Immigration Service as very crucial in the management of border security for the mutual benefits of the two countries,” Mr. Asuah Takyie observed.
He said the setting up of the Rapid Response Unit is one of the interventions aimed at providing support to the various operational units like the Border Patrol Unit and the Enforcement Division. He disclosed the officers of the unit have undergone enhanced training from the Ghana Police Service Counter Terrorism Training School and the Ghana Armed Forces Training School.
The officers, he said, constitute the core personnel to support current operations as and when the exigency demands, especially along the borders.
“The vehicles will assist in the fight against illegal entry andundesirable elements and other transnational crimes at the borders. I am confident the vehicles will boost the morale of the officers to deliver swift response to emergency calls by operational teams who may have come under attack,” Mr. Asuah Takyi said.
Deputy German Ambassador to Ghana Heldge Sander who handed over the vehicles observed “the threat of terrorist activities coming mainly from the northern neighbouringstates has become more acute in the last years.” He pledged the German government’s continued support for the Ghana Immigration Service.
