The police administration in the North East Region has moved to take further actions against an officer who facilitated the illegal acquisition of a gun license for a suspected thief on trial at the Nalerigu District Court.
The suspect, Inspector Felix Gbekle, formerly with Formed Police Unit (FPU) was said to have secretly and illegally taken photographs of a firearm, whilst still an exhibit in police custody and then facilitated registration license for the firearm for an accused currently undergoing trial for stealing.
The officer was arrested and after interdicting him, the IGP directed his accouterments to be seized while investigations proceed.
The Regional Police Commander, confirming the action to JoyNews, assured the public the accused police officer would not be shielded.
Background
Inspector Gbekle who is now in the custody of the Nalerigu Police was arrested and interrogated this last month at the North East Regional Police Command where he admitted to helping the suspect to procure the license.
He allegedly sent a picture of the gun to a colleague at the Formed Police Unit of the Tesano Divisional Police Command where he worked previously, to facilitate the process
According to information gathered by JoyNews, the suspect, Adam Musah was arrested in August this year for allegedly stealing.
Police subsequently found an unregistered pump action gun in his house during investigations.
Adam was arrested and charged with possessing an unlicensed firearm and stealing when he was put before the Nalerigu District Court.
As the trial progressed, however, the suspect managed to produce a license prepared by the Tesano Divisional Police for his gun.
Police prosecutors who became suspicious prayed the court for more time to examine the license which turned out to have been dubiously procured with the help of Mr. Gbekle.
The situation has since resulted in a widespread suspicion against the criminal justice system in the region, which has often led to the execution of what is being termed as Jungle Justice by aggrieved parties.
But the Regional Police Command is confident the police officer would be prosecuted as he has already been charged with abetment.
