The number of active cases of the novel coronavirus in the country has risen to 1,329.
The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) made this known at an engagement with the press to give the situational breakdown of the fight against the pandemic.
The country has, over the past two weeks, seen a sudden upsurge in new infections, a development with triggered President Akufo-Addo to remind Ghanaians of its threat during his 19th address on Sunday.
In a televised address the President expressed worry about the fact that Ghana had recorded an average of 130 new cases over the past two weeks.
“The number of daily infections is on the rise, from an average of 25 new cases per day then, to an average of over 130 new cases per day in the course of the last two weeks,” he said.
Speaking at a press conference at the Information Ministry in Accra, Dr Patrick Aboagye outlined that a significant number of the new cases are from the Greater Accra Region.
"About 861 of them are from Greater Accra alone accounting for almost over 70% to 80% of all the cases," he told journalists.
Dr Aboagye, however, reiterated that the health facilities are well-equipped with beds for the worst-case scenario should there be a surge.
"Still our hospitalisations are very low. We have 926 beds available in case of a surge. Our isolation capacity is 744 across the country," the GHS D-G explained.
Also at the briefing, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah debunked the suggestion that the current surge in Covid-19 numbers may be a result of ongoing political activities ahead of the December 7 elections.
