Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu says late former President Rawlings must be credited with an inter-faith cooperation model which allowed prayers of the 3 main religious groups to be offered before national events begin.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 17, during the signing of the book of condolence for the deceased former President, he also underscored the role the NDC founder played in making Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha national holidays.
“His directive was upheld by subsequent Presidents of our country that has become the foundation for dialogue and unity which the country is inherently enjoying.
"It has remained a model for interfaith cooperation and collaborations, with other nations coming to Ghana to also learn from us,” he said.
Sheikh Shaibu added that the National Chief Imam saw the former President as a caring and compassionate leader.
The Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Archbishop Charles Palmer-Buckle agreed. He said that history will vindicate the late former President’s contributions to the development of Ghana.
“We have to admit that an era has come to an end. But we also have to admit that unlike other heads of state in other African countries and beyond, when his term of office – two terms – were over, he handed over power and he stayed as a citizen of this country, contributing his share. And that is the weight of the impact that we have to admit that Jerry John Rawlings has had on Ghana,” he said.
