A leading member of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Sarpong, has condemned the burning of tyres and attack of police officers by NDC supporters in their last street protest in Kumasi.
The supporters stormed the Manhyia police station over the alleged arrest of their colleague. They pelted stones and vandalized private vehicles on the premises of the police station.
Some armed police officers who were injured in the unprovoked attack have been treated and discharged.
Samuel Sarpong, who was present at Sunday’s protest, admits some acts of the party members on the day were unacceptable.
He says such behaviour could create disaffection for the party.
“You can articulate your views without fight and that shows how civilized you are. I will like to advise our supporters to be civil in articulating our views so that we will continue to gain more sympathizers,” he said.
Mr. Sarpong added “If we get violent and people get injured, even if the former President John Mahama is declared winner eventually, he wouldn’t be happy to meet people maimed through such protests”.
The former Ashanti Regional Minister, however, will not rule out the option of seeking redress in court over what the party claims to be a flawed election.
“The public should know what we have realized so far as the election is concerned. If it becomes potent that we go to court we will go. We will do our part so far as democracy is concerned,” he stated.
Samuel Sarpong says both the NPP and NDC should let calm prevail.
“They should both restrain themselves from inflaming passion so things will not escalate. At the end of the day, the will of God will prevail,” he said.
