Over two weeks since the spectacle that hit Parliament, Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is still baffled by Carlos Ahenkorah's move which left many Ghanaians equally shocked.
The Tema West MP snatched the ballot papers from the hands of Parliamentary officials during the counting of votes to elect a new speaker during the inauguration of the 8th Parliament.
Giving fresh details of what transpired prior to the incident on Newsfile Saturday, the Majority Leader said he was approached by a 'jittery' and 'panicking' Carlos Ahenkorah during the counting with a concern about the possible outcome of the vote.
He quoted the MP Tema West MP as then asking him: "Leader, are we going to sit down for the NDC to take the Speakership position?"
This was the final interaction before taken the Tema West legislator had before the incident.
Mr Kyei Mensah Bonsu said he chided the MP on the rationale behind this comment, quizzing "Carlos, what do you mean?
"We just finished the voting and we're going to do the counting so where from this? He insisted that we don't have to sit down for them to win the Speakership position," he narrated.
"Then I said, hey Carlos, please get away from me. Because I wanted to follow the counting. I don't know what spirit entered him," he told JoyNews Saturday.
This directive to allow some space for the Majority Leader to observe the electoral process rather came too late in the day for Carlos Ahenkorah as he made a dash for the papers barely seconds later.
He was accosted by some officials and NDC MPs and the ballot papers vigorously retrieved.
Many have widely condemned the act describing it as shameful, infantile, and a dent on the country's democratic credentials.
The Majority Leader also described the act as reprehensible as it truncated the process - one of the numerous that characterised the dawn of the 8th Parliament's inauguration which spanned a battle over seating arrangement, an invasion of the chamber by police and military personnel among others.
Subsequently, the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) Alban Bagbin emerged Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
Carlos Ahenkorah has since said although he has no regrets because of his love and dedication to the NPP, he is heartbroken by the development of the day.
“We’ve not seen the end of this yet. With this success, they would tell us what they want and what they don’t in parliament because the whip system has been compromised. This is so sad. I’ll die for my party any day," he said in a statement following the melee.
