General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Titus Beyuo says prior to the reopening of schools, Ghana Education Service (GES) should have sensitised its members on the guidelines in managing Covid-19.
“I would have thought they would have segregated this and gone into the specifics. I am expecting the managers of schools and district directors to tailor this to their specific location and make sure they get things right,” he stated.
He was speaking on JoyNews’ Super Morning Show on Tuesday where he lauded the GES for putting in place strategic plans for the reopening of schools.
However, Dr Beyuo is of the view that such plans should have been implemented prior to the planned reopening.
According to him, the distribution of PPEs to students as stopulated in the GES policy should have been excuted ahead of the resumption of lessons.
“If you read the policy, you will see this shall be supplied, face mask and face shield to children with disability. Now we all followed the report of the delays in the supplies so if this nice document was there why couldn’t we have done the supply chainx.
"And even get the teachers educated on this policy before schools actually reopen," he stated
Meanwhile, Dr Beyuo suggests that a proper shift system be implemented since most students are caught flouting the Covid-19 protocols.
“Because in some of the schools unless they run a proper shift system social distancing is simply not practical,” he added.
His comments follow reports of widespread non-compliance with health protocols in schools as academic work resumes.
