A Health Economist, Dr Martin Akanore has highlighted the need for government to focus on workers in the informal sectors in ensuring workers are protected from Covid-19.

His comment comes on the back of the President’s directives that “all workplaces, public and private, must employ a shift-system for workers, in addition to the use of virtual platforms for business or work.”

According to the Akufo-Addo, most recorded cases in the second wave is said to be from the formal sectors, hence the instruction.

But speaking on JoyNews’ PM: Express Tuesday, the Health Economist quizzed “what about those who are working in the informal sector?”

“What strategies are we putting in place to ensure that whatever occupation or whatever job they are doing, their lives are still protected?”

According to him, failure to involve the informal sector may only mean the country is fighting a lost battle as there is a possibility that they may "infect the lives of the majority of Ghanaians.”  

Dr Akanore is of the view that the second wave presents a new opportunity for the country to relook and think about the safety measures of Covid-19.

“And for me, the key thing we need to look at is, how these measures have worked over the period in time,” he told JoyNews.

The Health Economist wants the government to involve both the formal and informal workers in ensuring compliance with the safety measures.

He also noted that “it is important that we all stick to the rules,” adding that there is a need for re-evaluating, re-strategising and re-invigorating public health.

He, however, advised all Ghanaians to adhere to all the safety measures that have been outlined by the government and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
