Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Ofosu Kwakye has said President Akufo-Addo’s directive to former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo to proceed on retirement makes him Ghana’s worst leader in the fight against corruption.
Mr Akufo-Addo’s action follows an indication by the Audit Service Board that Mr Domelevo has overstayed in the workforce as his retirement caught up in June last year.
But Mr Ofosu Kwakye says the move is the “final nail in the coffin in the fight against corruption.”
“Akufo-Addo will go down as perhaps the worst leader we’ve had in the fight against corruption because of the move against Mr Domelevo.”
He claims Mr Domelevo was hounded out because of his upcoming audit of Coronavirus expenditure by the government.
“Don’t forget also that Mr Domelevo was returning at a time when he could have had the opportunity to audit the books, with respect to their expenditure regarding the fight against Covid-19."
Mr Kwakye wants Ghanaians and civil society organizations to ensure public officials like Daniel Domelevo are protected.
"I don’t think that a soothsayer to tell you that because of the scrap record of this government, we were bound to find a lot of discrepancies, a lot of malpractices, and malfeasance.
“They certainly are not in any mood to allow Mr Domelevo to find out the rot that has gone on.”
He noted that “all governments have been saddled with public officials appointed by previous administer.”
