Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) says it will hit the streets next Thursday to protest what it describes as harsh economic conditions in the country.A leading member of the group Daniel Ofori Atta says the move has become necessary because government failed to heed their two-week ultimatum for a reduction in fuel prices.AFAG contends fuel price hike has brought untold hardship to Ghanaians, especially without the complementing increase in workers’ salaries.The National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaigned on promises of drastically reducing fuel prices.Government subsequently yanked off petroleum taxes which saw a 3-10% drop in fuel prices in the early weeks of the Mills administration.Since then prices of petroleum products have seen a whopping 40% rise.The group is also protesting government’s intention to increase academic facility user fees in the universities.Currently indications are that with government pursing its full cost recovery policy at the tertiary level, subsidies to the universities and colleges would drop.Hints of increased fees have already been met with awe by graduate students at the University of Ghana some of whom are paying over GH¢3600 for a year’s programme.
