The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering the introduction of new regulations to control internal jostling and premature moves for flagbearership of the party.

This follows what the party describes as a unanimous call for a leash on such moves ahead of the 2024 elections.

General Secretary of the party, John Boadu who spoke to JoyNews said the leadership of the party has touched base with the grass-root to hear their grievances, and mobilize them for the future.

According to him, members are concerned about the premature moves within the party over who to succeed President Akufo-Addo.

"Speaking with them [grassroots] right from Greater Accra, to Ashanti, Bono, and Ahafo regions, they all unanimously agreed that the National Executive Committee should come out with some guidelines to guide people from testing the waters too early", he said.

The race for the 2024 flagbearship of the NPP seems to be between the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Trade Minister, Alan Kyeremanten.

In the past few weeks, social media has been flooded with various pictures of the two and some others, canvassing for support to lead the party.

Although Vice President Dr. Bawumia has distanced himself from activities of his supporters, Mr. Kyeremanten is yet to comment on the matter.

In a statement released on March 24, 2021, the spokesperson of the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako said Dr. Bawumia was focused on helping President Akufo-Addo to realize his vision to transform Ghana.

Already, the party has initiated a campaign towards maintaining power in 2024 with a national tour to hear members’ grievances and mobilize them ahead of the 2024 elections. 

Touching on this, John Boadu said the party is bent on breaking the 8 year cycle with the NDC.

"For the first time in the history of this party, the entire national executives of the party have taken time off our schedule to interact with our constituency officials. Insha Allah by 2024, as for the presidential, Ghanaians will break the eight and give the NPP the majority in Parliament", he added.
