The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana @ 50 Secretariat, Dr. Charles Wereko Brobby has revealed that government owes him years of salary arrears. His revelation comes amidst concerns by the 2008 Auditor General's report which cited the secretariat for overspending. The secretariat was the implementation arm of the then Ministry of Presidential Affairs and supervised activities of the Ghana@ 50 celebrations. A total amount of GH ¢71.70 million was spent on the celebration, an amount critics say was on a high side. Some have accused Dr. Wereko Brobby and the ex-Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani of financial impropriety in the handling of the Ghana@50 funds. But the CEO is not the least disturbed by the accusations. Instead, he opined he has not been paid his salary arrears spanning over two years for his services rendered to the state. He told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong Nkrumah he is not in hurry to demand payments of his salary because other outstanding costs had to be paid before his emoluments. Dr. Brobby said he sunk his personal 2 billion old cedis into the celebration due to delays by the Ministry of Finance in the release of funds for the smooth organization of the celebration, an amount which was subsequently paid to him. He said the first installment of government's approved funds was made available to the secretariat eight weeks before the celebration itself. He is surprised that people will rather accuse him of spending government’s cash when the facts did not support such an allegation. Dr. Brobby was however satisfied that allegations of corruption which characterized the release of the draft copy of the Auditor General’s report on the celebration have subsided in final copy of the report released to parliament last week. The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament is to begin thorough investigations into how the monies were expended, an exercise Dr. Wereko Brobby maintains he is ready to make an appearance.
