Senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana has urged Alban Babgin to maintain a good balance between the interest if his political party and the nation's interest in the execution of his duties as Speaker of Parliament.

According to Dr Alidu Seidu, this is the only way to ensure that the mandate of the House is delivered to the latter.

He made these comments on the back of assertions by some executives of the NDC with some demanding his allegiance while others such as Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo called for him to rise above partisanship.

This came up during the Speaker's thanksgiving tour in the Upper West Region.

But speaking on Joy FM's News Night, the senior lecturer explained that "the neutrality of the Speaker can enhance deliberativeness and the conduct of democratic business in the house of the legislator."

He, however, admitted that an extent of party allegiance will ensure that Mr. Bagbin wins the heart of his party during subsequent elections of the next Speaker, hence the need for perfect equity between his political party and the legislature.

Dr Seidu further indicated that "It is also very important the Speaker is able to pay allegiance to the party that has brought him into power, especially when the permutations that we have."

"We know very well that after the end of the 8^th parliament definitely the majority if it still going to be the NPP or the minority may propose a different candidate for the Speakership position, so there’s a vow to be another election after the tent of the 8^th parliament so if you don’t try to balance and take into consideration the interest of the party that has elected you there’s a likely hood that they will desert you when you need them, so if you need their support you have to act in a way that is pleasing to them," he added.

The victory of Alban Bagbin as the Speaker of Parliament went into the history books of the country as the first elected Speaker from an opposition party.

Alban Sumana Bagbin on the eve of January 7, 2021, polled 138 votes during a secret ballot in Parliament leaving his predecessor Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye of the NPP with 136.
