Solar in the day, Hydro in the evening, Bui power authority produces 25 megawatts of power from solar as water levels in the dam dries up leading to cut in power generation.

On Monday evening there is an additional 22 megawatts of power to be added to the national grid which will improve the electricity supply in the country.

The Bui Power Authority has switched 22.25 megawatts of solar power onto the national grid.

Engineers at Bui, after getting the green light from the power transmitter, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), successfully turned on the switches for its 127 inverters, which store power harvested from the sun through solar photovoltaic panels, to feed the national grid.

Currently, Bui is unable to produce 400 megawatts of power from its hydro dam due to lower water levels in the dam.

Chief Executive Officer of Bui Power, Fred Oware tells Joy News the overall objective is to generate 250 megawatts of solar power.

We are on course and we are hopeful of achieving the target set, indeed during the dry seasons when the water level is down we can then rely heavily on the solar panel to give us the power that we need and when in the season the hydro will come in, He added.

The hydro-solar project is to augment the target to have 10 per cent renewable energy, which translates to about 5,000MW, in the national grid by 2030.

This will include new projects, besides the traditional hydro power sources the country already has.

Mr Oware said the construction of solar systems to increase generation at the Bui enclave in the Banda District in the Bono Region was in the interest of the entire national grid, as it would have access to more power generated in the middle belt for distribution around and to the northern part of the country.

"We have a Chinese investor that funded the entire project and per our calculation a megawatt of solar cost eight hundred thousand dollars but with the tariff regime in place, the investor will build operate and transfer in nine years," he indicated.
