Minority in Parliament has called on government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate steps to curb the increasing number of positive Covid-19 cases being recorded at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh in a statement expressed worry after the shocking revelation made by Frontiers Healthcare Service (FHS) that on Saturday, April 24, an all-time high figure of 75 travellers tested positive for the virus at the airport.

Mr Akandoh attributed the alarming development to “either poor tests or fake results.”

Thus, asked the government to double its measures to preclude Ghana from witnessing any Covid-19 spikes after making significant strides so far.

The Frontiers Healthcare Service (FHS) in a letter addressed to the Managing Director of Ghana Airport Company Limited, Yaw Kwakwa and copied to the Ghana Health Service on Saturday raised an alarm on the growing number of positive Covid-19 cases being recorded at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

FHS further indicated that it has become imperative to implement new guidelines to curtail the influx of positive cases into the country.

In the bid to contribute solution to the situation, the Juaboso MP, said government must consider travel restrictions on countries currently experiencing high Covid-19 infection.

According to him, a careful examination of test results presented by travelers must also be enforced to ascertain their authenticity.

“Ghanaians have endured many losses in terms of lives, resources, lost opportunities with the economy taking a hit resulting in one of its lowest growth rates since the inception of the 4th republic.

“After all these sacrifices, the current situation at the airport may be heralding a disaster of unimaginable proportions if not addressed. It is therefore incumbent on government to take its responsibility at the airport more seriously and as a matter of urgency,” he wrote.
