The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has called for calm among the general public over a recent surge in active Covid-19 cases imported at the Kotoka International Airport.
According to Director-General of the Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, measures are already in place to manage the situation.
"The PCR testing at the airport was implemented to for the purpose of checking the importation of the virus," he said.
He further disclosed that "some persons who tested positive were denied entry into the country."
This comes after Frontiers Healthcare Service (FHS), the company responsible for Ghana’s Covid-19 testing at the airport raised concern over the increasing number of positive Covid-19 cases being recorded at the KIA.
According to the healthcare service, 75 positive cases were recorded on the 24th of April, 2021 against the previous highest rate of 45 positive cases recorded on the 21st of April, 2021.
Frontiers, therefore, has called for the implementation of new guidelines to curtail the influx of positive cases into the country.
Responding to this on the Super Morning Show, Dr Kuma-Aboagye urged calm among the public, stressing that all positive cases recorded at the airport have been isolated from the general population.
"Those who are sick are being placed in hospitals and those who are not sick are put in some of the isolation centers for health workers to take care of until they are negative and are allowed to go home.
"And for persons who are coming in, we ask them to self isolate. But now we (Ghana Health Service) follow-up with tests to ascertain whether they are still negative," he said.
He, however, noted that most of these persons are Ghanaians returning home from countries such as the UAE, India, etc, adding that, arrangements have been made such that, persons coming from high risk countries will be tested three days after they arrive, even when they test negative at the airport on their day of arrival.
