Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has stated that the party will continue to commemorate the June 4 revolution, in spite of the demise of its architect, former President Jerry John Rawlings.

This, he believes will preserve the legacy of the late former President.

"Anybody who thinks that the demise of J.J. Rawlings is the demise of June 4, is living in a dreamland. We will continue to celebrate June 4 and we will continue to do that in perpetuity because the principles of probity, integrity, accountability, and social justice that he espoused are more relevant today than even on June 4th, 1979" he said.

Mr Ankrah emphasised that the former President left a lasting legacy that cannot be forgotten, "J.J. Rawlings has sowed a seed and lighted a flame that cannot be quenched under any circumstance. That's why it's important that we continue to commemorate June 4, celebrate him, and draw lessons from the event," he said.

Commenting on events of the June 4 military junta, the former Sports Minister described the revolution as "the foundation on which the country's democracy was built."

He contends that prior to the revolution, the country was in such a mess that it needed the intervention of a person who was willing to fight and seek the good of the country.

"The country was in a mess to the extent that Rawlings burst onto the scene and when he executed the generals Ghanaians cheered.

"We believe that he has left a lasting legacy and it's important that we continue to commemorate it, celebrate, and learn lessons and inspiration from it."

"We are sad but at the same time, we take comfort in the fact what Jerry Rawlings started cannot be quenched. We are going to celebrate it even more and we're hoping that the 50th anniversary is going to be an international event."
