Director of Public Affairs at the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Efia Tenge has disclosed that five persons have been arrested in connection with recent robbery attacks on the Achimota-GIMPA stretch.
Residents and motorists who ply the route have, in recent times, been complaining about various attacks by criminals on the stretch.
Giving details of the arrest Monday on the Super Morning Show, she indicated that three persons were arrested earlier, then another man, who tried to snatch a commuter's bag was also arrested.
The third arrest involved one Kofi Mensah, who tried to escape but was shot by a police patrol team.
The Police also arrested one of two culprits involved in another robbery attack at the GIMPA-Fiesta Royale Junction on Saturday.
DSP Effia Tenge, who briefed Host Kojo Yankson on this development said the incident occurred Saturday evening at about 9:30 pm.
She blamed the trend on the vast nature of the Achimota forest, which she said serves as a hideout for the criminals and other factors, including poor lighting in the area.
"Their modus operandi has been that because of the vast nature of the forest, these criminals use this place as their place of abode. So once a while, they come out of the forest and strike.
"We have also observed that the lightning situation on that stretch is very poor and from what we know as a security service, criminals will always take advantage of dark places to advance their robbery activities. In spite of these difficulties, this year we have not arrested not less than 5 persons," she said.
She further noted that "three of the arrested persons are being investigated since some had narcotic substances on them with others are also on bail."
"For enhancing police measures we have reviewed some of our strategies. We used to have only three checkpoints on the strectch but we have augmented the number. Now, we have five," she said.
"Then again we also have our plain clothe personnel who sometimes go round doing their own surveillance to feed the operational men with information and also we have motorbikes and armed men who have been deployed," she added.
