A Law student at Central University has cited the law enforcement agencies in the country for being selective in their application of the law.
Bernadette Fafa Ankuvie, citing the recent controversy surrounding the burial of late former Forestry Commission boss, Kwadwo Owusu Afrieyie, said the President, the Vice, and other top government functionaries with thousands of mourners breached the Imposition of Restrictions Act of Covid-19.
According to her, while several individuals were slapped with charges for breaching the Covid-19 safety protocols, these top officials were not punished.
"It is obvious that our system is plagued with selective justice. Our leaders can flout Covid-19 protocols whiles those who held a religious event were held culpable."
Earlier this year, three members of the Christ Embassy Church and manager of the Fantasy Dome were slapped with charges for breaching Covid-19 protocols when they organised an event which hosted thousands of worshippers despite the ban on social gathering.
Speaking on Joy News' The Law, Sunday, Fafa Ankuvie noted that the failure of government officials to comply with rules and regulation has triggered the mass disregard for certain laws by the populace.
"I believe that in our part of the world, people can’t appreciate the law because those we have selected to represent us don’t even adhere to the law themselves; they break it and expect us to live by the rules they have set.
"Leadership by example, if you want the citizens to abide by the rules, set the path for us to follow, if they are breaking the law, it hard to compel the citizens to adhere to the rules they have set. We have entrusted them to do this for us, but that is not the case," she added.
Fafa Ankuvie further stated that the law should be applicable to everyone to serve as a deterrent to those who breach it.
"Everyone should be held accountable; no one gets to flout the law and get away with it because you are in high power or position," she said.
