The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, has revealed that four suspected killers of former Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford have been jailed 20 years each for robbery.
DCOP Ken Yeboah briefing the media at a news conference in Accra on Wednesday stated that five armed robbers were apprehended on May 11, 2021, during a robbery incident on the Jakobo-Obuasi highway but unfortunately, one of the robbers was shot dead by the patrol team.
According to him, the robbers during interrogation confessed to being involved in the murder of the late Ekow Quansah Hayford.
DCOP Ken Yeboah added that per the confession, the convicts will be made to face the courts again for the charge of murder of the late legislator.
“They were charged with robbery based on the fact of the May 11, 2021 incident, that is the highway robbery on the Jakobo-Obuasi road. On June 18, 2021, after the trial, they were convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment each.
“All the convicts are to be arraigned before the court in respect of the robbery and murder of the late Ekow Quansah Hayford. It means that we are now going to charge them and try them for the murder of the MP,” he stated.
Mr. Hayford was shot and killed after his car was attacked on the Nkusukum Mankessim-Abeadze Duadze road in the Central Region.
Eyewitnesses say the suspected armed robbers numbering about six shot at the MP’s vehicle when his driver attempted to drive away from the robbery scene.
After the car stopped, the driver was shot by the armed robbers to serve as a deterrent to others who might try to escape.
The MP is also alleged to have confirmed his identity to the robbers when asked who the MP of the constituency was. He was then shot twice, resulting in his death.
