The Songhor lagoon in the Greater Accra regional town of Ada, Ghana’s richest salt mining site, has been handed to a company called Electrochem Ghana Limited.
The deal, ratified by Parliament, gives monopoly of a lagoon in which people of Ada have mined salt for centuries, to one firm.
The company has promised to provide jobs and bring much-needed development to the area. But would this be enough to end years of violence and corruption that has surrounded the lagoon’s management?
