Head of Community Health at the University of Ghana Medical School, Professor Alfred Yawson is asking the government to intensify its advocacy to get Ghanaians to adhere to the Covid-19 safety protocols.
He says legislation alone won't help remedy the current situation. Ghana's current Covid-19 case count stands at 4,531 with 823 deaths.
President Akufo-Addo on Sunday while delivering his 26th update on measures taken by the government to mitigate the spread of the virus, said the Covid-19 task force had recommended that a second look be taken at the protocols that have been put in place for the holding of funerals and weddings across the country.
Among other things, the President ordered that all events associated with funerals and weddings must be held in open-air spaces. He also banned post-funeral and wedding receptions.
Speaking to Mamavi Owusu-Aboagye on the AM Show on JoyNews Monday, Prof. Yawson said, "initially it was a stigma, we've dealt with it and now it's the continous denial of the existence of the virus in the face of rising numbers and mortality that we need to work on".
He added. "the community and public level education has been the challenge, we need to continue to engage the general public on this. We also need people who have had the virus to come out to educate the citizens on the virus. It is a process that we need to continue. It is not something we can achieve in a number of days. The legislation will not help. We need to self-sacrifice. The disease doesn't discriminate between the rich and the poor," he added.
Prof. Yawson believes an all-hands approach is needed now to stem the tide. He also implored Ghanaians to reactivate adherence to the safety protocols.
