District Director of Health Services, Dr Alfred Kwadwo Ampofo says the surge in Covid-19 cases in the Techiman Municipality is a situation that calls for drastic action.

"The major concern that we have at Techiman North is that, there's this low perception of the disease now, as compared to when the disease came around June last year. You could see that everybody was actively fighting the disease and people, the churches and the security were all adhering to the protocols," he told Joy News.

He added that "now it looks like our guards are being let down and everything we are doing is not up to standard. You go to the market and you see the crowd with people not adhering to the protocols, same applies to the churches, funeral grounds, and what this means is that it calls for reinforcement and we have to re-strategize as well".

Dr Alfred Kwadwo Ampofo who made these remarks at the Assembly's first General Assembly meeting, called on the District Security Council (DISEC) to institute a task force that would ensure that the laid down protocols are adhered to, strictly.

"Today at the General Assembly meeting, we have made some suggestions and this includes a standing committee that would ensure that organizers of events both social and funeral, should come to the Assembly for permission so that people would be held responsible if these protocols are broken at these gatherings," he noted.

District Chief Executive for the area, Mr Peter Mensah indicated that the Assembly is considering the adoption of instant fines for persons who continuously neglect the safety protocols.

"One additional proposal being made is that a Covid task force committee is instituted to come up with strong laws such as instant fines to people who disregard the safety protocols so that these recalcitrant ones would contribute to our efforts in raising revenues to help the Assembly and this would also serve as a deterrent and motivate others to be wearing the nose masks," he said.

He adds that the Assembly is, through the District Security Council (DISEC), mounting checkpoints to monitor persons visiting the District.

"You know the entry and exit points of Techiman North are critical with people coming from Tamale, Wenchi and Kumasi all passing through the District, the District Police Commander has been tasked to ensure that any passenger that passes through the District be thoroughly checked to ensure that they are wearing what would protect them from the Covid-19 disease".
