The 1991, 1993 batch of the Bishop Herman College in Kpando has presented 53 desktop computers, 15 laptops, a projector, a screen, and some uninterruptible power supply units to their alma mater.
The move is geared towards equipping the information communication technology department to enhance the teaching of the course to enable students acquire the requisite requirements for the current job market, as well as fit into the global village.
About 550 of the 2,200 student population are studying elective ICT, however, there is not enough ICT equipment for the training of the students.
There were only 23 computers available for use by the students.
The Incharge of the School’s ICT Department, Kavege Vinyo Peter, explained the situation had been challenging, where they had to organise classes in batches and pair students to a computer.
“Some teachers will have to teach the practical aspects in the night”, he said.
“For the core, we didn't even allow them to come into the lab at all, we have to teach everything in the classroom. And you can understand teaching excel in the classroom. What kind of impact are we making on the children?”.
“But we do our best, sometimes we will look at the schedule and weekends the teacher brings a whole [core] class to the lab”, he added.
Nonetheless, the Bishop Herman Old Boys, 1991 and 1993 year groups came to the rescue of the school.
The Project Coordinator for the year groups, Komla Wogbe Ofori, explained they had intended to supply 100 units of computers to augment the study of the ICT discipline.
“In the light of ICT study, examinations they do now require the tactical use of computers and laptops and that is why we took that opportunity”, he said.
He believes the presentation would help the students “catch up with the world trend as far as ICT is concerned”.
Mr. Kavege lauded the gesture indicating that the ICT department is now well-stocked with the requisite equipment for studies.
He is optimistic the initiative would help better prepare candidates for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), especially for the elective ICT students.
