Information reaching JoyNews indicates that Akosombo International School has been hit by Covid-19 as over 20 students have tested positive for the virus.

According to JoyNews' Head of Health Desk, Fred Smith in a report, these students numbering about 24 have been relocated to a hotel in Atimpoku for isolation.

On Friday, October 1, health officials in the Eastern Region conducted general routine tests, where it was revealed that some students have fallen prey to the virus.

JoyNews has gained knowledge that parents and guardians of these wards are, however, yet to be informed of the incident.

Also, all mediums used by the Kokomlemle-based media house to reach the institution have not been successful.

"Efforts to reach the school have proved unsuccessful so far but according to our sources the students were identified to be infected during a routine test in the school. 24 of them, we understand, came out positive. Those are the students currently in isolation at Mayline Hotel in Atimpoku – that’s outside the Akosombo town.

"We’re not sure yet if there’s been quarantine for students who may have been in contact with their infected mates on campus. The main concern right now is that parents have not been informed officially. Some of them have managed to get the information through unofficial sources and are worried about the management of the situation by the school," Fred Smith noted in his report.

Meanwhile, it is reported that during the general routine tests carried out by health officials in the region, some individuals in the Akosombo town tested positive for the virus.

Thus, the need for caution at the regional level.

In early February this year, Akosombo International School reported that 40 students at the school had tested positive for Covid-19.

On February 8, news broke that the school had recorded 37 additional cases. The Executive Director of National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) confirmed the incident.

The affected students were isolated. Lead inspector of NaSIA, John Kweku Aggrey, said a shift system will be rolled out in order to improve social distancing in classrooms as mass testing continued.

Following this, a report by a Covid-19 compliance inspection team indicated that Akosombo International School and Aggrey Memorial Zion Senior High School that recorded some Covid-19 cases are adhering to the basic safety protocols.
