Perennial flooding at Old Tafo Zongo in the Ashanti region often causes havoc, including drowning children and exposure to environmental health risks.
Residents say the poor drainage has worsened over the years due to the poor drains in the area.
They are hoping the new Municipal Chief Executive of Tafo-Pankrono Municipality, Lord Inusah Lansah, will live up to a promise to get the poor drainage system fixed.
The river ‘Bookara’, once a source of potable water for the people of Old Tafo Zongo.
As time passed, the river developed into a gully.
Over the past 29 years, drainage has become a concern for residents.
It poses a danger to residents, passers-by and has caused several deaths.
Some residents have turned it into a refuse dump and place of convenience, making it home to mosquitoes.
But the newly-confirmed MCE for Tafo-Pankrono, Lord Inusah Lansah, observed the municipality has retarded in development over the years.
He has prioritized reducing unemployment and fixing the poor drainage system in the area.
The MCE urged the assembly members and the constituents to unite and support him to develop the municipality.
Mr Lansah garnered 21 out of 24 votes, representing 87.5 percent to be confirmed MCE.
Mr Kwame Kyei, who represented the Ashanti Regional Minister, encouraged the MCE and the people to work together to rationalise the area's developmental goals.
The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly was carved out of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly as one of the 38 newly created and upgraded District Assemblies in 2018.
